Health anxiety is a condition marked by a person’s imagination of physical symptoms of illness.
First rule – never google your symptoms. We always hear this, but trust me, the most important part of healing ourselves is never search for our symptoms or read reviews of other patients.
I don’t have a doctorate degree in psychology. I have 3+ years seeing a psychologist and everything I will share with you will be from my own experience and doing some research in internet.
What does it feel to have a health anxiety?
Have you ever experienced sudden thoughts attack? You feel stuck in your own thoughts and more you try to get out of them more you experience anxiety? Well, the worst thing about panic attacks, which can easily follow after you experience health anxiety, is you never know when such thoughts will attack your mind and just in one click change your whole day.
One doctor after another, a lot of screenings, consultations, doubts and long and difficult days. The problem is you are not going to trust doctors. And every negative test will bring up a new question “Why there is no single doctor who can find my illness?”.
My personal experience !
About 2 years ago I had an unusual headache, one I never experienced before. First days were ok I would say, but after about 5 days I got really panicked. So what was going on with me? Yes, the headache was real, but what if it’s something dangerous? I started to think that I was having a serious illness and I need to see a doctor as soon as possible. There is a rule – never go deep into your thoughts and never make imaginary scenarios. Also, never listen to people who tell you not to go to a doctor because they are sure nothing is going on with you.
And yes, there will probably be nothing wrong with you, but if you have a tendency to get panicked and become too nervous about certain situations, you have to go and get checked as soon as you get symptoms. Because what happens next is that you are going to become concerned in every small pain. And all you will think is “I never had such pain in the past. Everything has started after this symptom.”. And by “concerned” I mean you will notice and will over react and even react to the pain you would never notice and react in the past. And the trickiest part of these kind of thoughts are that you will eventually start experiencing symptoms of the illnesses you think you have.
Even after medical test results come back negative, you will feel extreme distress about your real or imagined symptoms if you are experiencing health anxiety. Because the illness you fear might not be the illness you have.
I never payed attention to my health or symptoms before, so everything happening to me was totally new. And every single thought was about my health, my symptoms and pain. It’s like not being able to see the world. I was only thinking inside my head and body. I couldn’t see and notice outside world. And I imagined and made scenarios so much that I could easily “see” my every organ.
How I overcame health anxiety
- Therapy with psychologist
- Going back and trying to find/remember anxiety or fear triggers
- It’s possible that a conversation in which you took part or overheard had a bad impact on you. Negative consequences do not have to manifest right away. It normally takes some time for it to stick in your mind and cause uneasiness.
- Meditation.
- Positive affirmations: Anxiety is not a dangerous condition. I’m just feeling uneasy. It’s just me being pessimistic.
- Even though I’m nervous I’m confident that I’ll be able to get through it. I’m going to be all right.
- Research: search for people with the same experience, using hashtags and groups will help you a lot. This type of anxiety is very common and I found out by just only searching for ” #healthanxiety” hashtag in Instagram and boom – I am not the only one.
- Don’t postpone meetings or events because of your symptoms. ( If you seen a doctor and you got your negative test results)
- Share your journey with your friends and family. Let them know what are you going through. Conversations about certain situations help us to know that we are heard. And knowing we are not alone will motivate us to overcome difficult situations easily.
- Physical exercises: Running, fitness or long walks. Depending on a person, psychotherapist will even make you to do heavy exercises and long runs.
