Hey guys, welcome to my blog.
My name is Mariam, I am am from Armenia but now I live in United States. Its already my 3rd year of living in Los Angeles.
The reason of moving to USA was my marriage, my husband was born here. It was a little bit easy for me because we both are Armenians and my husband is a pilot, so I had plenty of opportunities to go to my country, visit my family and that made my adaptation process a little bit smooth if I can say it so.
Before I got here, it was a little difficult for me. The only thing I’ve heard about the United States is that there is no communication. You’ll be stuck at your place if you don’t have a vehicle. There are no buses or subways, and taxis are not available. No one has spare time, and everyone works from home. Hearing these words and then deciding to leave your busy life behind and relocate to the United States is difficult.
In this post I want to tell you about the things I wish I knew before moving here.
Most important things you should learn before moving to United States
Driving
- Despite the fact that i never liked driving, its probably one of the most important things you should learn before moving here. I mean, you can learn it here as well, but having a driver license before you come here can make a huge difference, because you can drive with your foreign license for 3 months and it will make things easier for you and if you need to go to work you will probably need a car.
- I am sure you were also been told that there is no public transportation: that’s not true
Education
California allows certain students to receive institutional scholarships and financial aid at colleges and universities if they meet income guidelines.
But if you are not eligible for a scholarship, I would suggest that for example if you are a digital marketing specialist start working on your new skills and certificates online before moving here. Because this again will let you have some USA or International educational background and you won’t waste your time and you will be able for example to apply for internships when you are in US.
Work
Yes, United States is a country of opportunities, but if its a right way to say – you need to have some opportunities to get opportunities. I mean if you want to make a fine career and work in one of the leading companies you need to have a degree, it means if you are someone who doesnt qualify for a scholarship you need to work really hard to get a degree, which is not something cheap.
US job market is really competitive and you better, like besides having degree or certificate, be really good at what you are doing. Like just imagine there is a company which hires new employees and there are like 5 applications – 4 are us citizens with high education, degrees, experience, and you – who has an experience only in his country and doesnt qualify for US job market.
Accepting that you don’t have a job is equally challenging. We all know that America is the land of opportunity. We constantly expect that as soon as we arrive, everything would be easy. However, this is one of the most discouraging things when it comes to establishing a profession from the bottom up.
Language
I wont discover something new if I say you have to know English if you want to live in United States. Again, don’t waste your time and start learning or working on your English speaking skills before coming here. Not being able to communicate in US will actually make things really difficult.
