Ever been to New York City? I mean the real New York City – loud, busy, and full of surprises everywhere you look? If you haven’t visited yet, I hope this post helps you plan your trip. And if you have, maybe this will bring back some good memories.

New York, especially Manhattan, feels like something from a dream or movie. The buildings are tall, there are always crowds of people, you can find food from all over the world, and there’s something interesting on every street.
Why Manhattan Feels Like Another World
New York is called “the city that never sleeps” for good reason. When you first arrive at Penn Station or come up from the subway, you feel it right away – the noise, energy, smells, chaos, and beauty. No other city moves this fast or feels this exciting. Manhattan makes you feel both tiny and inspired at the same time.
Even if you only visit for a few days, this city sticks with you. It gives you a feeling that anything is possible.
Getting to Midtown Manhattan from the airport
If you’re flying into JFK, here’s a simple way to get into Manhattan without spending a fortune: take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamaica Station, then hop on the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). It drops you right at Penn Station, in the heart of Midtown.
If you’re on the East Coast and near an Amtrak line, taking the train might be even easier. It’s comfortable, scenic, and drops you right into the action without airport headaches.
First impression? Manhattan is so loud.
My very first trip to Manhattan was short and sweet, literally just one day. I flew in early in the morning and headed back to LA that same evening. It was rushed, yes, but unforgettable.

I remember walking around in total awe, taking in the sights, the people, the buildings. I went straight to Times Square (yes, touristy, but how can you skip it?) and then made my way to the top of the Empire State Building. The view from up there was insane. You really feel the size of this place, endless buildings and lights stretching far beyond what the eye can see.
It honestly felt like I was inside a movie. So many people, both locals and tourists, rushing everywhere. It was noisy, yes. It was chaotic. But it was also beautiful in its own way.

The Subway: Getting Around NYC Made Easy
The subway is the best way to see NYC if you want to save money or time. It’s quick, cheap, and easy to understand after you’ve used it a few times. Plus, riding the subway is part of the real NYC experience.
On the subway, you’ll meet all kinds of people – artists, office workers, families, and more. It’s lively and interesting, and you won’t waste time sitting in traffic.
My Christmas Visit to Manhattan
My second trip to New York was with my husband during Christmas. This visit felt completely different – more relaxed, cozy, and magical. Even without snow on Christmas Eve (which was a bit disappointing), the city had exactly the holiday feeling I was hoping for.
We walked around with hot chocolate, enjoying the holiday lights and decorated Christmas trees. It felt just like a holiday movie. Everyone was wearing warm coats and scarves, and holiday music played everywhere.
We also visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This experience really touched me. It was sad, meaningful, and powerful. It made me think about how precious life is. We stood quietly to show our respect. It’s a place that makes you think deeply about life.
Walking Across the Brooklyn Bridge, NYC
Another highlight was walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. Built over 130 years ago, it connects Manhattan and Brooklyn and offers some of the best views in the city. You can see the skyline, the water, and the Statue of Liberty in the distance. It’s one of those walks that feels more like an experience than a simple walk.

We took tons of photos, like everyone does, but more than anything, we just enjoyed being in the moment
The New York Energy: It Pushes You to Dream Bigger
Manhattan fills you with energy. It makes you want to dream bigger and do more. After living in a quiet European city and then LA, New York’s fast pace felt completely different.
Every street is busy. You won’t find a quiet spot. There’s always people around and things happening.
Yes, it’s crowded. Yes, the streets aren’t always clean. And yes, everyone’s in a hurry. But that’s what makes it real – it’s raw, lively, and genuine.
Must-See Places in Manhattan
If it’s your first time visiting, here’s a quick list of must-see places. You won’t be able to see everything (no one can), but here are the classics:
- Times Square – Lights, crowds, energy. It’s overwhelming but iconic.
- Empire State Building – Go to the top for a stunning view.
- Central Park – A quiet break in the middle of the city.
- Wall Street & Financial District – Great for photos and learning about the city’s financial roots.
- Statue of Liberty – Take the ferry or just admire from a distance.
- Broadway – If you love theater, catch a show!
- Brooklyn Bridge – Don’t miss walking across it.
- 9/11 Memorial & Museum – Emotional and powerful.
- Fifth Avenue – For all the shopping lovers.
- The High Line – An old rail line turned into a beautiful park.
Food in New York: A Whole Trip on Its Own
Let’s talk food, because NYC is a food lover’s paradise. Whether you want $1 pizza slices, Michelin-star dining, food trucks, or authentic dishes from literally every country, it’s all here.
Some of my favorite things to eat while walking the city:
- A classic New York bagel with cream cheese
- Hot dogs from a street vendor
- A big slice of cheesy New York-style pizza
- Fresh churros from a vendor in Queens
- Warm chocolate chip cookies from Levain Bakery
- Coffee shops everywhere, but try to find small, local ones. They’re cozy and full of charm.
Helpful NYC Travel Tips
Here are some simple tips from my trips to New York:
- Plan your days but leave free time. The city is big and you’ll get tired.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll walk more than you think.
- Use the subway. Get the app and travel like a local.
- Bring a portable charger. Your phone will run out of battery from taking pictures.
- Avoid tourist traps, especially in Times Square.
- Explore without a plan sometimes. That’s how you find the best hidden spots.
